Company Overview
Amperesand is disrupting industrial power with the first commercialized Solid State Transformer systems. Solid State Transformers systems are much more than a transformer replacement, enabling numerous advanced features to unlock solutions for data centers, EV charging, renewables, microgrids, and industrial installations. We are looking for mission driven team members passionate about making amazing products for worldwide electrification at maximum acceleration. Amperesand is building a global company and looking for talent across our geographies.
Job Overview
As a Technical Product Compliance Engineer, you will be a critical part of the product development process—getting ahead of engineering design decisions by identifying and interpreting applicable regulatory standards. You will work closely with product managers, engineering, and third-party test agencies (such as TUV, UL, or CSA) to align product innovation with global certification paths. This role requires deep familiarity with standards such as UL 1741-SB, IEC 60730, and IEEE 1547, along with the technical understanding to guide teams through the practical implications of compliance decisions.
You will also represent Amperesand's interests with NRTLs, shaping how our products are reviewed and helping ensure we retain maximum design flexibility while achieving certification. If you’re driven to turn compliance into a competitive advantage and thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Standards Mapping & Interpretation: Identify relevant regulatory standards during product planning (e.g., UL 1741-SB, IEC 60730, IEEE 1547, NEC 705) and guide cross-functional teams on how to comply efficiently.
Early-Stage Engagement: Engage early with product managers, firmware teams, and hardware engineers to de-risk compliance bottlenecks before they emerge downstream.
NRTL Engagement: Build relationships and coordinate test and certification efforts with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (e.g., TUV, UL, CSA) to secure certifications while advocating for interpretation favorable to Amperesand.
Documentation Ownership: Develop and maintain compliance documentation including test plans, technical construction files, declarations of conformity, and certification roadmaps.
Test Planning & Witnessing: Oversee pre-compliance testing, witness formal certification testing, and support root cause analysis for any failures.
Cross-Functional Alignment: Collaborate with the compliance manager, product team, system architects, and safety engineers to ensure clear alignment between system features and regulatory deliverables.
Compliance Strategy Development: Shape a long-term strategy for global certifications (e.g., CE, UL, UKCA) that supports modular deployment, software updates, and evolving grid codes.
Continuous Learning: Track evolving standards and codes; share summaries and implications with internal teams.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the People Manager or required by the business to support team and organizational goals.
Qualifications & Skills
Experience: 5+ years in regulatory engineering or compliance roles in power electronics, embedded systems, or capital equipment.
Standards Expertise: Proven experience applying and interpreting UL 1741-SB, IEC 60730, IEEE 1547, and/or other international grid interconnection or safety standards.
Test Lab Collaboration: Hands-on experience working with third-party labs (e.g., UL, TUV, Intertek, CSA) for product certification and compliance negotiation.
Documentation & Process: Skilled in producing compliance documents, test procedures, and certification plans.
Regulatory Navigation: Strong grasp of North American and IEC-based product compliance ecosystems, including listing, labeling, marking, and conformity requirements.
Technical Acumen: Ability to read electrical schematics, firmware logic, and system diagrams to trace regulatory impacts across the product.
Communication: Confident explaining technical standards and certification options to engineers, managers, and external stakeholders.
Technical Skills
Standards Interpretation: Deep knowledge of UL 1741-SB, IEEE 1547.1, IEC 60730, UL 1998, and NEC Article 705/710/480.
Product Testing & Pre-Compliance: Experience designing and overseeing compliance testing (dielectric withstand, grounding, functional safety, EMC).
Digital Compliance Systems: Familiarity with digital tracking tools (e.g., compliance matrices, traceability charts, documentation repositories).
Power Systems Literacy: Understanding of medium-voltage systems (e.g., 22 kV), PCS/inverter architectures, and smart grid control integration.
Safety Engineering Liaison: Ability to collaborate with FMEA/safety teams on hazard analysis and mitigation from a compliance perspective.
Bonus Exposures – Energy Industry Focus
Energy Sector Knowledge: Experience working on projects related to smart grids, renewable energy, or energy management platforms is a plus.
